Housed in an elegant Victorian terrace, past the bohemian enclave of Melbourne's famous Brunswick Street, Matteo's offers seasonal contemporary Australian cuisine with Japanese overtones and an extensive wine list featuring rare ‘cult' Victorian wines. Chef Brendan McQueen's dishes are polished and assured and with a dash of Italian hospitality from the ever-present owner Matteo Pignatelli, this smart restaurant is the full package.
Matteo's encompasses a chic European dining room with salon-style decor from velvet drapes to lush wallpapers. Opulently decorated, the rich colours, heavy damask linen-set tables and ambient light fittings, create a luxurious feel and add a sense of occasion to the dining experience. There is also a chic bar area for a casual meal and glass of wine. The open area exudes style and sophistication with comfortable banquette seating and the ambiance or original antique French bar fittings.
What works so seamlessly is the combination of the formal and the cool. Owner Matteo Pignatelli, continues to re-invent the restaurant, which has been showered with coveted Chef Hats since 1996.
