Pocket Bar Pocket Bar, 13 Burton St, Darlinghurst NSW 2010, Australia

One of the newest arrivals on the Darlinghurst restaurant scene, Pocket brings a whole lot of attitude with its serving of bar snacks, small share plates, bigger share plates and desserts. Pocket is a great venue for any type of fun gathering, including hens, bucks or just drinks with your besties.

The iron gates that guard the entry-way are a good indicator of what Pocket is all about – individuality. And this quirky bar/restaurant has been pieced together with plenty of it; I can assure you of that. From the large, eye-catching pop-art feature wall, through to raw concrete floors, brick walls and an eclectic mix of furniture, this bar manages to be artsy, post-modern, art deco and atmospheric all in the one no-BS package. The patrons of Pocket are not so much "diners" as "loungers" – for in truth there are no formal tables or table settings. What the bar does have, however, is an array of armchairs, chaises, love-seats and coffee tables spanning several styles, textures and even eras, brought together by the personal style of owners Karl and Christophe.

However, no matter if you chose to perch on a Baroque-style studded velvet armchair, or "chillax" on a 1970's retro velour love-seat, you are sure to enjoy the food. Stepping away from ordinary restaurant/bar fare (no surprises here), Pocket offers an inventive array of savoury and sweet crepes. The savoury variety mixes up a few core ingredients into choices such as field mushroom and spinach, ratatouille and goat cheese, smoked salmon and spinach and herb-marinated chicken with creme fraiche. There are also plenty of sweet suggestions – the Nutella and strawberries crepe a particular highlight for me. Pair these up with a wine, spirit, cocktail or National Geographic magazine from the bar (whichever suits your fancy), and you have yourself a pretty good night. And while this is not the place you would bring your grandmother – or your 18-year-old cousin for that matter – it is a great spot to bring a group of chums, sip on a glass of wine and appreciate the finer things in life.
