Maggie's authentic German and Austrian restaurant in Potts Point embraces every stereotype with vast schnitzels, Germanic knick-knackery and cleansing steins of traditional beers. Take your place at one of the wooden tables which are set among lots of interesting paraphernalia which harks from Germanic regions.
You may as well have hopped on a plane, landed in Vienna and sought out the nearest eating house. Maggie's authentic German and Austrian restaurant embraces the yodel-quivering, lederhosen-wearing, sauerkraut-munching and stein-grasping stereotypes that we hope and pray are a realistic interpretation of these upstanding Europeans - if only to realise a dream. Indeed, the menu sports all the favourite dishes we love to feast on, and with a dining room that resembles a traditional drinking hall, you're in for a tummy pleasing and entertaining meal. Take your place at one of the wooden tables which are set among lots of interesting knick-knackery which hark from Germanic regions. Otherwise, outdoor tables spill from the restaurant for those who fancy alfresco dining.
To put it gracefully, the portions are rather generous and marry wonderfully with the awesome range of imported tap beers, so bring a healthy appetite and leave the car at home. Begin with something wickedly delicious such as the deep-fried camembert with cranberry sauce or crumbed beef Dutch croquettes served with mustard. For a true taste of the homeland, try the ungarisches goulash of tender shin beef cooked in spicy paprika sauce with spatzle (little flour dumplings), the krautrollanden cabbage rolls, or the veal medallions in champignons cream sauce and rosti potato. Predictably however, most come for the schnitzel dishes, of which there are several. There's the regular crumbed chicken schnitzel with salad and rosti, but why not go wild and order the cordon bleu pork schnitzel stuffed with ham and cheese? Wash your meal down with a stein of Erdinger, the world famous wheat beer, or Bitburger, Germany's top draught beer, and if there's still room on your dessert side, tuck into some apple strudel with ice-cream.
