Having moved to a new location in the heart of Crows Nest, Bravo Trattoria remains a family favourite among the locals. The restaurant offers the best of Italian cuisine, including pizza from the wood-fired oven. However it's best known for carrying an exciting range of desserts including a myriad of delicious gelato flavours. The Bravo dining room is modern, minimalistic and spacious.
Let's get one thing out of the way; this is probably not where you would take a date for a romantic dinner – unless, of course, your date was a gelato fiend. In this department Bravo Trattoria and Gelato Bar can impress with its selection of homemade Italian ice-cream. When it comes to appearances, however, it is a few candle-lit corners shy of intimate, romance-inspiring dining. It is more of a destination for locals, families and sports teams. The walls of the restaurant are painted with Italian-inspired restaurant motifs, the tables and chairs are a mix of plastic and metal and the only views are of Falcon Street or the kitchen. The service, however, is fast, pleasant and attentive and the food is simple, tasty and great value-for-money.
Perhaps what Bravo is best known for (other than its tempting gelato counter) is its range of "pick and mix" pasta. With this you have complete freedom of choice – first select your pasta type (penne, fettuccine, ravioli, etc) from a range of eight, then scan some 28 options for your favourite sauce and off you go. The pizza menu, which comes with its own "eating pizza the Bravo way" guide, is also not far off in scope of choice. Naturally there are also other dinner options in the form of veal scaloppine, eye fillet steak and chicken, as well as restaurant specials. But watch how fast you fill up because you'll regret not leaving room for dessert. The crepes Bravo – mars crepes with chocolate gelato – will tempt you alongside a number of homemade cakes. If this is too much of an undertaking, at least try a scoop (or two) of the famed gelato; after all, this is what has made this Crows Nest restaurant a bit of a local institution.
