A delicatessen, restaurant and sanctuary in one, 2042 Cafe and Deli has brought a new dimension to the Newtown dining scene by providing locals with a creative, seasonal Modern Australian menu, comfortable setting, ethically-minded attitude and a smile with every meal and coffee. The dining room is filled with spongy couches and fashionably distressed tables. A bright spot during the day, at night, candles are lit and romance is key.
Whoever coined the phrase "Jack of all trades, master of none" must never have dined, lunched or "breakfast-ed" at 2042 Cafe and Deli. This place, tucked at the shy end of Newtown's King Street, is a multi-tasker extraordinaire. Looking breezy and effortlessly calm, it is at once a top-quality deli and a destination for early morning coffee and breakfast, business and mothers' group lunches, after-work cocktails and intimate evening meals. Run by Andrea Kudelova-Kells and Gav Kells, who boast an impressive 20 years in the hospitality industry, it is also a great embodiment of the eclectic and ethically-aware suburb it resides in. Where possible it uses organic produce and also has a selection of gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options.
The restaurant space melds simple, modern design with shabby-chic hominess. Every corner and tabletop is adorned with greenery and, for added comfort and convenience, there are a couple of couches and free wireless internet. A gleaming glass counter and bookshelf offer deli goodies (including Australian and international cheeses, cured meats, oils, bread and homemade cakes) for purchase. This part of the restaurant also fuels the imagination of the chef and, subsequently, the modern Australian (with an Italian bent) menu that greets diners at all times of the day. Opening its doors at 7:30am, 2042 offers breakfast until 4:00pm. A lunch menu made up of sandwiches, salads and more substantial meals is available from noon to 6pm, at which time the dinner menu takes over. But perhaps the best way to experience 2042's offering is with a platter. This gives diners an opportunity to sample deli produce, including pricier French cheeses and Jamon iberico without taking the plunge at the counter. Coupled with a glass or bottle of boutique wine, it is the perfect way to appreciate the mastery of all of 2042's trades.
