The Royal Green Jackets Museum in Winchester, England was opened by Queen Elizabeth II, the regiment's former Colonel in Chief, in 1989. It is situated within Peninsula Square, formerly Peninsula Barracks, the home of The Rifle Depot.
Situated adjacent to Winchester’s Great Hall and within easy walking distance of the City centre, The Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum, opened in 1989, is one of the best regimental museums in the Country. It is also one of Winchester’s five military museums. Visited by thousands every year, the Museum records, visually, graphically and entertainingly, the history of The Royal Green Jackets and their predecessors who were three of the finest and most famous regiments in the British Army. In the same building, but separate to the Museum, is The Rifles Collection allowing visitors to follow the story of Rifle Regiment into the present day.
Opening times
Please note: the Museum will be closed Monday afternoon from 12 noon (11th December) and Thursday afternoon from 12 noon (14th December).
The last day of opening before Christmas will be Saturday 16th December.
Wheelchairs The museum displays are situated on two floors. A wheelchair and stair lift is available for visitors use.
Toilets
Wheelchair-accessible toilet and baby changing facilities are located on the ground floor.
Car Parking
There is limited free car parking on site for visitors to Winchester’s Military Museums only. Please follow the signs and/or ask the Museum staff for advice on where to park. An alternative is to use Park and Ride alighting at the Westgate stop.
Guide and Assistance Dogs
Guide and Assistance Dogs are welcome at the Museum. If you need further assistance please speak to a member of staff. We do have hearing impairment Induction loops at the Front Desk and various locations throughout the displays.
The shop is located near the museum entrance with a selection of souvenirs and gifts, including books, branded t-shirts, caps, key-fobs and mugs.
For coffee, a light lunch or afternoon tea, Copper Joe’s Café can be found next door at the Guardroom Museum located on the right as you enter Peninsula Barracks. Open from 10am until 4pm (closed on Monday’s).
The Collection
Artefacts and Objects
Our Collection is wide ranging and diverse with many interesting artefacts on display. The Medal Collection covers campaigns from the 18th – 21st Century; medals are displayed throughout the Museum as well as in the Medal Room.
Documents
The museum has an extensive archive of documents ranging from letters written by Black Bob Craufurd in the Peninsular War to items from the present day.
Photographs
We have 23,000 photographs in our archives, plus albums. We regularly feature a photograph from our collection in our on-line gallery.
In total there are over 40,000 objects of considerable historical interest in the Museum, including uniforms, medals, weapons, silver, paintings and other items.
