In July 2011, we opened our public visitor and education centre in the Fair Maid’s House in Perth, next door to our headquarters, creating a new geographical heart of Scotland. Anyone is welcome to visit the Fair Maid’s House, which is open to the public over the summer months.
The Royal Scottish Geographical Society's visitor and education centre in the Fair Maid's House is a geographical delight housed in the oldest secular building in Perth.
Visitors can watch the planet from space and see the continents evolve in the Earth Room; learn about the hottest and coldest places on Earth in the Education Room; and learn about maps and explorers, or curl up with a book, in the Explorers' Room.
The normal opening hours this year are 1.00pm to 4.30pm, Tuesdays to Saturdays, 8th April 2017 to 21st October 2017; groups can request a special visit at other times. Admission is free, and donations towards RSGS’s work are welcome. The centre is manned entirely by volunteers, so if you are planning a special journey you may wish to check in advance that it will be open.
The centre allows us to store and display items of our collection, to host touring exhibitions, and to welcome schools, other groups, and individuals. It provides a base for academic researchers and those planning trips, and for people just wanting to spend time in a beautiful place. It gives us a fantastic opportunity to explain geography and to explore geographical issues, through stories of inspiring people and interesting issues. And it can even be a venue for a wedding or civil partnership ceremony.
The Fair Maid’s House is located in central Perth, just behind the Concert Hall. It is only a mile from Perth Railway Station, less than five minutes’ walk from Mill Street bus stops, and only two minutes’ walk from Kinnoull Street car park.
