Pitlochry Dam Visitor Centre Pitlochry Dam Visitor Centre, Armoury Rd, Pitlochry PH16 5AP, UK

Brand new for 2017, SSE's Pitlochry Dam Visitor Centre showcases the rich history of hydro electricity in the north of Scotland and how it transformed lives. On display are a number of fascinating artefacts that show how generations of homes have been transformed by electrical appliances.

Visitors will meet the visionaries, such as Tom Johnston, who saw the untapped potential of hydro power in Scotland as well as hear the stories of the Hydro Boys and Tunnel Tigers who lived - and sadly in some cases died - building the schemes.

Pitlochry’s ‘fish ladder’ was integral to the design for the hydro electricity scheme in the early 1950’s. Thousands visit the Dam to see the salmon swim to their breeding grounds up river and now everyone can learn the secrets of that incredible journey.

The Area

Pitlochry is situated in the heart of the stunning scenery of Highland Perthshire. The town sits below Beinn Bhracaigh (Ben Vrackie), the speckled mountain and beside the River Tummel, in some of the most magnificent scenery Scotland has to offer. With a backdrop of surrounding hills and beautiful woodlands, it is wonderful walking country.

Queen Victoria visited the area several times and Pitlochry has been welcoming visitors from far and wide for over 170 years. Pitlochry is justifiably proud of its Victorian heritage and tourism traditions, and offers visitors much to enjoy throughout the year. It is the ideal holiday destination for those who love Scotland's hills and heritage, and its central position make it easily accessible by road or rail.

The River Tummel is also home to one of Scotland’s most iconic species, the Atlantic salmon, which uses the famous fish ladder at Pitlochry Dam to make its way to spawning grounds upstream every year. The fish ladder is made up of 34 chambers, each with slightly higher water level to the one below, making up a series of steps which lead the fish gradually up to Loch Faskally.

Café: Visitors to the Pitlochry Dam café can enjoy freshly brewed coffee and tea and be tempted by freshly made cakes, scones and sandwiches – all set to the stunning backdrop of Loch Faskally below.

Thanks to our viewing balcony visitors can soak up the glory of the River Tummel as it tumbles past the fully working Pitlochry Hydro Station and even look out for a leaping salmon on its way upriver.

Inside the café there’s free Wifi, intriguing electricity exhibits to marvel at; as well as a full range of locally sourced food and drink to savour, making the Café the perfect Perthshire pit stop.

Gift Shop: Our gift shop stocks a range of souvenirs and gifts for young and old. That’s everything from local salmon and seasoned favourites like shortbread to more unique and handmade items made by local artisans.

Meeting Rooms: Available for hire. Capacity 60 people for conferences, private functions etc.
