Quaint museum featuring exhibits & educational programs focused on local history & heritage.

Located in a beautiful Georgian building in the historic town of Hoddesdon, Lowewood Museum showcases the history of the Borough of Broxbourne. Discover the history of the local area from prehistoric times to the present day. Explore the stories of those who have lived and worked here, from Royal Academy artist James Ward to the Pulhams of Broxbourne, one of the most important garden designers of the Victorian era. Activities, events, exhibitions and gallery trails ensure there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Our collection includes geology, archaeology, social history, costume, photography and art. Highlights include our impressive Bengal Tiger, which was formerly on display at Cedars Park, a fine collection of James Ward paintings, First World War diaries, and the story of James Pulham & Son, one of the greatest landscape design firms of the Victorian age.

Entry to the museum is free. Donations are welcome

Car Parking

Free parking is available for museum visitors at the Spotlight Theatre, EN11 8BE (2 minute walk from the museum). Further pay and display parking is available in the town centre (10 minute walk from the museum).

Public Transport

The museum is a pleasant 20 minute walk from Broxbourne Railway Station. Broxbourne Station Cars taxi rank is located outside the station entrance. Buses also operate outside the station and a bus stop is located directly outside the museum’s entrance.

Access and Facilities

Step-free entry access is available from the museum's garden entrance (to the back of the museum), please ring the bell if visiting via this entrance. Wheelchair access is limited to the ground floor galleries (Temporary exhibitions are located on the ground floor).

Toilets are located on the ground floor. A unisex accessible toilet suitable for wheelchair users is available. Baby changing facilities are also available.

Reception and Shop

The museum’s reception and shop are located on the ground floor where a great selection of local history books, gifts and souvenirs are on offer for all ages and pockets.

Garden

The museum has a delightful garden which is a beautiful open space to enjoy a picnic, on our lawn or picnic tables. The garden area is accessible for all and activities are often held here during the summer months.

Additional Information

Lowewood Museum is committed to providing access to all. Where it is not possible to provide physical access to the upper floors alternative provisions can be provided through notes and images of what’s on display.
