Performance Venues at The University of Sheffield consists of three principal venues, the 1500 capacity Octagon Centre, the enormously flexible Drama Studio and the Grade II* listed grandeur of Firth Hall, run by a small team that provide event and space management expertise to the University, the Students Union and a wide range of external event organisers, producers and promoters.
The breadth of programme we initiate and support is quite extraordinary, covering a huge number of core University events, conferences and festivals through to theatre, dance, comedy, live music and cabaret. We’re particularity proud to be instrumental in the presentation of a number of key Sheffield Cultural Festivals such as the Enable Us Festival, Off The Shelf, DocFest, Tramlines, Sensoria and Festival of the Mind.
All of our spaces are available for hire and offer a variety of options for presentation that will cover all needs requirements. In addition to the venues, our Event Management and Technical & Production support are second to none, so we really are a one-stop shop solution.
We also promote and co-promote, so are interested to hear from you if you’re a promoter looking for a tour stop for live music, comedy and dance. We’re supporting small-scale theatre and performance, training, development and participation through the Enable Us Project, which gives us the opportunity to present shows in Sheffield that might not otherwise have had a home in the city, as well as providing creative development opportunities for our students and young people in the region.

It took me a full week to research and secure the information and assistance I needed to get suitable access sorted out. We still ended up parking in the wrong place because I hadn’t spotted information about blue badge spaces in the side street (I still haven’t found that). I’m used to doing my own research but not everyone would be able to persist. In the end I managed to get help from the lovely Theatre company putting on the performance even though they are not even based in Sheffield! You need to get your act together. Wheelchair provision within the building is not the whole story when it comes to access. You need clear information about parking, suitable seating reserved in the venue and clear information about concessions and “essential companion” provision. If that means phoning the venue you need someone to pick up the phone and ensure they are correctly briefed.
