Bushey Museum is in Bushey, Hertfordshire. It was officially opened as a volunteer-run museum in October 1993, having achieved Full Registration with the Museums and Galleries Commission.
The Museum tells the story of Bushey and its unique artistic history. It has a large collection of works and articles relating to Sir Hubert von Herkomer RA and his world-renowned Art School. Also on show is the Lucy Kemp-Welch Memorial Trust Collection, including many of Lucy's superb paintings of horses.
Bushey Museum covers local history through the Bushey Museum Trust's collections of artefacts, documents, maps and works of art. A wide range of local records can be inspected at the Museum's Local Studies Centre. A booklist covers many publications of local interest, some of which are available in the Museum shop.
The collections include many items generously given to the Trust by members of the public. The Museum is grant-aided by Hertsmere Borough Council and run by volunteers.
Facilities for disabled people
Following improvements funded jointly by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Hertsmere Borough Council, Bushey Museum has excellent facilities for the disabled. A gently inclined ramp with handrails has been installed at the Museum main entrance. The Herkomer Room and art galleries on the first floor are accessible by means of a newly installed lift which has a gate opening of 800mm, sufficient for a standard-size wheelchair. Specially adapted toilet facilities are available for our disabled visitors.
Our access policy statement is available here.
General Facilities
New modern toilets have been installed as part of the recent improvements. There is limited car parking on the museum site but plenty of space is available in nearby Kemp Place free public car park. The Museum has a small meeting room available for hire at attractive rates.
