Beccles & District Museum Beccles & District Museum, Leman House, Ballygate, Beccles NR34 9ND, UK

In 2018 the Museum will open to the public from Friday 30th March until Wednesday 31st October inclusive. The Museum will close for the winter on Thursday 1st November.

During the season we are open Tuesdays to Sundays from 1:45pm to 4:30pm. We are closed on Mondays except for Bank Holiday Mondays, when we are open from 1:45pm to 4:30pm.

Entry is FREE, but generous donations are very much appreciated. The Museum relies heavily on donations to maintain the Museum's collection, to run the building and to keep it open to the public.

VISITING IN THE WINTER MONTHS

The Museum is not open on a routine basis over the winter months (November to March) but it remains available to researchers, and we continue to take school and group bookings throughout the winter. For research visits and group bookings please contact the Curator at museummanager@btconnect.com

LOCATION

The Museum is located in Ballygate, Beccles. It is a short walk from St Michael's Church and its tower, which dominate the centre of town. With your back to the church, walk past the Swan House Inn on your left and then past Barclays Bank also on your left, taking you into Ballygate. 400 metres up Ballygate on the right hand side you will see the flint-fronted Grade 1 listed 16th Century building, Leman House, that accommodates the Museum. The Street Map shows the location in relation to other parts of the town.

If arriving by train or by boat, it is possible to walk from the railway station and from Beccles Quay on the River Waveney.

Once at the Museum building, enter the garden through the pedestrian gate off the pavement and walk round to the back of the building, where you will see the porch and entrance.

DISABLED ACCESS

We have an entrance for the disabled and there is a toilet adapted for disabled use. There is a lift to accommodate wheelchairs to circumvent the short flight of steps into the School Room.
There is a small 'hands on' area for those with impaired vision.

GROUP VISITS

We welcome group visits and it is possible to arrange group visits in or out of normal opening hours, subject to staffing. We can accommodate groups of up to 25 people. We find that groups usually spend about an hour in the Museum. Please contact the Museum in advance to make a booking so that we can make the necessary arrangements to ensure your visit is enjoyable and successful.
