Arrowrock Lodge is in the townland of Ballynary on the shore of Lough Arrow in County Sligo. The exact date it was built is unknown but it was a large working farm in the early 1800’s. According to the previous owners (the property was in their family for well over a 100 years) the oldest part of the building was here from at least the early 1700’s. Arrowrock Lodge may have been the birth place of Ambrose O’Higgins. He became Viceroy of Chile and Peru and his son, Bernardo O’Higgins, led the revolt against the Spanish and eventually became the First President of Chile. Arrowrock Lodge is the site of the O’Higgins ancestral family home and site maps dating back to the 1500’s show a large building in exactly the same position as the oldest part of the present building.
