Sitting in a fold in the hills at the top end of Glenralloch which leads from West Loch Tarbert to Loch Fyne, the Steading at Barmore provides accommodation with a range of options and is just a 2 minute drive from the picturesque fishing village of Tarbert, Loch Fyne.
The Victorian steading was built around 1839, shortly after Barmore House (now Stonefield Castle). William Playfair was the architect for Colin Campbell and some of the features used in the main building can be seen at the steading – crow stepped gables, fine sandstone dressing on windows and doors. There is a stone built barn on 2 floors closing the east side of the courtyard formed by the byre, cart shed and farm servants’ cottages. It was the nerve centre of the estate until 1948 when it was sold with “the big house” and continued to operate as the home farm until 1965. It is a listed building and is one of very few complete Scottish farm steadings still in existence.
If you want to stay a night, a couple of days, a week or more, a warm welcome awaits. Maybe you are visiting Argyll for a quiet holiday, to take part in an activity or are hopping onto a ferry to Islay or Arran but the beauty of staying at Barmore is that you will get more than a room and you can set your own pace to do things your way, to suit your timetable. Whether you go North, South, East or West, you can drive, walk, cycle, sail and explore this spectacular county.
In 1986 it was resurrected from a ruinous state and sympathetically restored by the current owners to provide a range of self-catering holiday accommodation types. Outside you see the history of the buildings and inside you can relax in comfort thanks to tasteful modern styling. Each cottage has its individual features and attributes but shared facilities include a large lawn (50m X 30m) and bike storage.
