Aware of the need to surround ourselves with disability experts to think and build a global accessibility policy, the Mucem formed, from the beginning of the project, a committee that brings together Marseille associations representing disability. Together, they reflected on the physical, sensory and cognitive accessibility of the museum.
In July 2014, the Mucem obtained the Tourism and Handicap label.
Visual impairment
The presence of a companion is highly recommended. Visually impaired people can borrow loupes free of charge at the locker room. Assistance guide dogs and walking sticks are accepted in the museum.
The tactile routes of the Mediterranean Gallery
The Mediterranean Gallery is the semi-permanent exhibition space located on the ground floor of the Mucem J4 building (main building). As of November 29, 2017, this space offers two different exhibitions: "Ruralities" and "Connectivités". A tactile path is proposed in each of the two exhibitions. Designed to meet the needs of visually impaired and blind visitors, these courses are integrated into the exhibition and accessible to all visitors. Each tactile object is accompanied by large-print and Braille text.
The sensory itinerary of the exhibition "Ruralities" presents an introduction station and tactile interpretations of five major themes of the exhibition.
Given the nature of the elements presented in the exhibition "Connectivités", the tactile path is exclusively installed in the historical part of the exhibition. It offers an introductory station and six stations dedicated to major Mediterranean cities of the 16th and 17th centuries.
These courses can be discovered during a guided tour or every day using the audioguide.
