Accessibility

We are committed to ensuring we provide an accessible environment for all our visitors at Werribee Open Range Zoo. We achieve this in a variety of ways.

Discounts for carer and companion card-holders

  • Free entry for carers accompanying a person with a disability who is a holder of a Child Disability Allowance Health Care Card, a Disability Pension Card or a Companion Card

Accessible parking

  • There are accessible parking bays near the main entrance of the Werribee Open Range Zoo.

Accessibility for wheelchairs and strollers

Werribee Open Range Zoo has an easy-to-follow pathway system, with access for people using wheelchairs and strollers.

A limited number of Baby Jogger strollers are available to hire.  Single strollers will be available for $17 for Zoo Members to hire and $20 for non-members. Double strollers will be available for $29.75 for Zoo Members to hire and $35 for non-members.

Stroller hire is kindly supplied by our partner Baby Jogger. Please note: Photographic identification and credit card is required upon arrival and advance bookings can be made via (03) 97319610.

Wheelchairs are also available for hire at Village Trader
Cost: $20 fully refundable deposit
Photographic identification required.

Accessible toilets

Our accessible toilets are located at:

  • our main entrance (near Ranger Kids)
  • the Meerkat Bistro
  • Safari Station

Accessible vehicle tours

We have four wheelchair-accessible Safari buses.

Our Safari vehicles can accommodate two standard wheelchairs, or one electric wheelchair per vehicle. The wheelchairs are accommodated at the front of our vehicles alongside the driver and will be safely strapped in.

Bookings are advisable. Tel: 03 9731 9610.

Our Off Road Safaris use a 12-seater vehicle that can accommodate a person in a wheelchair who can transfer across to a seat.

Unfortunately, we do not have a wheelchair accessible mini-bus at the moment for our Tall Order Giraffe Feed.

Ramp access to our vehicles is available, if required.

Access for assistance animals

Assistance animals that are certified by a registered authority are welcome at Werribee Open Range Zoo.

However, for the safety of your animal and our animals, assistance animals are not permitted at:

  • Lion Encounter
  • African Cat Encounter
  • Mini Zoo Keepers
  • Gorilla Behind the Scenes
  • Raising Rhino
  • Off Road Safari
  • Tall Order Giraffe Feed
  • Slumber Safari and Australian Journey

If visitors would like to attend these experiences, they can be escorted by a staff member or volunteer guide. Assistance animals will be cared for during their visit to these experiences.

Our admissions staff can help with these issues and any queries. Just ask us when you arrive. If needed, our staff can also look after your assistance animal.

Mobile guided tours

Zoo Volunteers offer free tours in an electric golf cart designed to assist with accessibility through the expansive zoo grounds.

Our vehicles can carry up to three passengers at a time. They travel at walking pace, so that assistants, family or friends can tour alongside, on foot. Tours run for approximately one-and-a-half hours.

Advance bookings are required via 03 9731 9610.

Operating terms and conditions apply.

Access for Deaf and hearing impaired people

OpenAccess Excursions – designed to increase accessibility and learning outcomes for all students including those who are Deaf and hearing impaired

OpenAccess Tours – this free mobile app enables Zoo visitors who are Deaf or hearing impaired to access information in Auslan and / or captions via their smartphone.

We hired a wheelchair to wheel her around and that was easy enough, all the enclosures are wheelchair friendly. The staff during this trip was so very helpful and kind toward our wheelchair family member. To hire a wheelchair you need to pay $20 as deposit and it is refunded on return. Plenty of parking space available.
