Flesk Water Camping is an ideal location from which to base yourself for exploring the Glens of Antrim and the Causeway Coast, and especially if you fancy hopping across the Straits of Moyle to the Mull of Kintyre on the Ballycastle to Campbelltown ferry. It’s easy to get here using public transport or under your own steam. Our aim is to provide more than the minimum adjustments required for visitors with additional mobility needs. Our entire site is wheelchair-friendly, with no steps to negotiate. There are 11 bathrooms, including two that are wheelchair-accessible. Each bathroom is self-contained, including all the essentials—WC, wash hand basin and hot showers.
It’s quite nice around here – we’re on a 2 acre site that’s bounded on one side by the Flesk Water, a little river where buglife such as dragonflies, mayflies and damsel flies thrive, and by hedgerows and green fields on all the others. The river is shaded by mature trees—see how many fish you can spot darting about under the surface, or if you’re lucky a kingfisher flitting from the bank.
There’s plenty of other birdlife to look at and listen to—blackbirds and finches, warblers and blackcaps, blue tits, wrens, robins and many more. Herons occasionally stalk the river bank, swifts perform their aerial acrobatics, while from time to time buzzards circle patiently above. There’s something special about this place—we like it here and we reckon you will too.
Our camping and glamping accommodation is ideal for families, couples and individuals, for those who like to explore the open country and the open road, for the traveller on a budget, for star-gazers and for everyone else too. There’s a bit more privacy than in a youth hostel, but it’s less pricey than a B&B.
Timber cabin
Our first cabin, The Barn, is inspired by the traditional appearance of the arched roof seen on so many farms in this area. The arched ceiling and concealed lighting creates a beautiful sense of space inside, while the half-door is an ideal spot from which to watch the sun go down. An elegant and extremely comfortable option for a family getaway, The Barn can sleep up to six people, with a double bed and a set of triple bunks which sleep two children/one adult below and one child above, plus a sofabed for one more adult. It’s an ideal accommodation option for the whole family, and ramped access ensures full accessibility. With beds placed in one half of the 236 square foot area, soft seating as well as a rocking chair are provided in the other half for relaxing together after a day’s sightseeing.
Our second cabin (coming soon) will sleep up to seven!
Camping
If you’d rather stay in your own tent, there are three dedicated camping terraces with generously proportioned camping pitches. With the outdoor kitchen area, indoor kitchen and bathrooms conveniently near at hand, each terrace has been planted out with a range of summer fruiting trees – sweet cherries, plums and greengages. You can help yourself to some fresh fruit straight off the tree in season!
Campervans/Motorhomes
Our wee place isn’t a caravan park – it’s too small for that! – but we wouldn’t like to see anyone stuck for a place to stay for the night, so we can accommodate a (very) limited number of campervans / motorhomes. During the peak of the summer season, we may have to restrict such bookings to two per night, but we should be able to welcome up to six per night off peak. Electric hookups and fresh water supply are available and there’s a small. semi-enclosed outdoor area for setting up your own awning, deckchairs etc – a place to relax and let the gentle sound of the river flow by.
Facilities
A communal picnic area contains several picnic tables with views across the North Antrim countryside, down to the river and the little stone bridge. While the need for social distancing continues, there will be no indoor kitchen facilities, but our outdoor kitchen includes a double outdoor cooking station with 4-ring gas hobs, as well as two kitchen sinks with hot & cold running water and and a small food preparation area.
Our fire circle is a beautiful place to while away the long summer evenings and make new friends. The fire pit is surrounded by several “love seats” – individual outdoor seats, connected together in sets of two. These in turn are surrounded by a ring of native trees. An ideal spot for socialising or just gazing into the flames as the twilight fades, it’s also perfect for barbecuing, or toasting marshmallows! Only untreated wood or charcoal can be used in the firepit – if you haven’t brought your own fuel, you can always buy some here. We do ask however that you look after the fire responsibly. Children must be supervised at all times.
There are 11 bathrooms, including two that are wheelchair-accessible. Each bathroom is self-contained, including all the essentials—WC, wash hand basin and hot showers. For the time being, each household is assigned its own specific bathroom so as to ensure the safety of all guests. A little honesty shop provides some essentials you may have forgotten to pack, such as teabags, toothpaste, kindling, bamboo cutlery etc.
