Victoria Park was opened in 1906 in the Connswater area of Belfast. Belfast Harbour Commissioners investigated the idea in 1854, however the land was very marshy and needed draining near Belfast Lough. It was landscaped by Charles McKimm, who also built the Tropical Ravine in Botanic Gardens.
Like hundreds of other towns, Northern Ireland is famous for its peaceful green areas. Victoria Park offers you a means to kick back for a while and unwind. Come and meet new people, arrange a date, listen to music, have a picnic, play with your kids, read a book, do yogasanas or sunbathe in your free time.
Victoria Park is not just a cherished green space with inspiring horticultural displays, it also features soccer pitches, traditional bowling green, cycling and BMX track, plus dual lakeside walking trails, so there's plenty to occupy you for an afternoon!
There are loads of interesting birds to be found by the lake, including swans, geese, ducks and herons, but it's important that you don't feed them please, as they are attracted to the park in such numbers (due to them expecting your old bread when they arrive!) that they're causing worries at the nearby airport. However the airport itself can add a bit of extra excitement for kids as the craft are known to frequently fly over the park extremely low down!
Get the kids over the duck disappointment with a trip to the the playground, though it's not huge and really best for smaller types, or around the lovely Poetry Trail: a collection of engraved plates around the park featuring poems on nature by local primary school pupils. Sweet!
