Located just a few miles from the northeast boundary of Mount Rainier National Park in Greenwater, Washington, Alta Crystal Resort is a world away form the hustle and bustle of city life. Nestled in a verdant forest next to the rushing waters of Deep Creek, this property makes the perfect home base for a Mount Rainier visit. And since a 2019 renovation included the addition of an accessible cabin, it’s the perfect choice for wheelchair-users and slow walkers who want to explore one the most beautiful national parks in the Evergreen State.
There’s level access to the small front office at Alta Crystal Resort, and the accessible Creekside Cabin is located just across the parking lot. There’s plenty of room to park an adapted van near the cabin, and ramp access up to the front porch. Other access features include wide doorways, lever handles, wood floors and good pathway access.
Named because of its proximity to the creek, the cabin includes a great room that’s furnished with a 29-inch high king-sized bed with wheelchair access on both sides, two night stands, a love seat and a wardrobe — all situated in front of a cozy fireplace. The walls are decorated with vintage ski equipment, and the exposed beams add that perfect outdoor ambiance to this upscale log cabin.
The other side of the great room includes an 11-inch high queen-sized sleeper sofa, a standard sofa and a coffee table. The adjacent kitchen has everything you need to whip up your favorite meal, but if you’d rather take the night off, there’s a good selection of prepared entrees available in the gift shop.
The bathroom features a full five-foot turning radius and is outfitted with a large tiled roll-in shower with two showerheads. The shower measures a whopping seven feet across and four feet deep, and a portable shower chair is also available upon request. Other access features include a roll-under sink, and toilet grab bars on the back and left walls (as seated).
Last but certainly not least, there’s level access out to a private back deck which is surrounded by the forest. It’s furnished with two Adirondack chairs, a charcoal grill and a hot tub, but there’s still room for a wheelchair. It’s the perfect place to sip a glass of Washington wine, sit back and enjoy Mother Nature’s handiwork.
