Small dockside museum featuring ship models & artifacts related to Stavanger's maritime history.
Stavanger Maritime Museum was established in 1926. The aim was to increase knowledge about the maritime industries and local shipping.
The collection was built up through purchases and gifts from sailors and their families, local shipping companies and companies. Archives, artefacts and photographs were collected documenting Rogaland's maritime history, Stavanger's city history, and the importance of the shipping industry for the cultural and economic progress of the region. Later, coastal culture and marine archeology have also been central to the collection development.
Central themes in the collections are vessel protection and vessel use, shipbuilding, crafts and industrial development, development of maritime industries, seafarers' working and living conditions, marine archeology and marine archeological finds, urban history in a maritime perspective and navigation historical material.
The museum's collection plan has 7 central themes: Rogaland and Stavanger in the world - the international perspective, the maritime city of Stavanger - Urban development in a maritime perspective, shipbuilding, utility boats, and vessel protection, seafarers and coastal population, shipping lanes and navigation, marine resources and future, the sea as a carrier and inspiration.
Stavanger Maritime Museum has a photo collection consisting of approx. 48,300 historical photos, taken between 1895-1960.
The collection reflects the historical changes in Rogaland's maritime history, business and urban development, and for the region's coastal population. The main motifs are shipping, historical Stavanger motifs, documentation photos and family photos, and of ships based in Stavanger.
Among the photographers in our collection is Julie Lund, a female commissioned photographer in Stavanger who took various portraits, city motifs and interior photography. We have a large collection from Fotohuset Greve, a local photo shop in Stavanger. The motifs vary from landscape, ship portraits, documentation, and various maritime themes. The museum also has a large private collection from the Grude family, which contains various family photos, Stavanger motifs, and motifs from Rogaland Theater, including actor portraits and stage photographs.
We have received these photographs in various ways, some have been purchased and most are gifts from families, sailors and companies. We still accept photos and gifts from individuals and companies. At the same time, the museum has started collecting digital images through social media and other digital platforms.
The photographs in our collections are registered in a database, and a selection is published at the Digital Museum for the public to order. The public is also welcome to contact the museum directly to order a photo from our collection.
Stavanger Maritime Museum has a large drawing archive consisting of approx. 6000 construction drawings from the local shipyards Stavanger Støberi & Dok and Rosenberg Mekanisk Verksted. In addition, the collection of survey drawings consists of a number of utility boats built in Rogaland.
About. 1000 of the drawings for Stavanger Støberi & Dok have been registered in our database and a selection of them has been made available at the Digital Museum. We work continuously with registration and publication of the rest of the drawing archive, so the public can see and study them.
