"ASTRA" National Museum Complex is a museum complex in Sibiu, Romania, which gathers under the same authority four ethnology and civilisation museums in the city, a series of laboratories for conservation and research, and a documentation centre.

Located in the center of Romania, in Sibiu, the ASTRA National Museum Complex is the most important ethnomuseum institution in Romania.

Conceived under the auspices of the Transylvanian Association for Romanian Literature and the Culture of the Romanian People - an institution founded in 1861 -, the ASTRA Museum - then the Museum of the Association - opened its first exhibition on August 19, 1905.

The museum was born from the desire of the Transylvanian Romanians to define their own ethnocultural identity, in the ethnic conglomerate of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and against the background of the cultural emancipation of all the peoples of Central and South-Eastern Europe.

Continuing and preserving the patrimony and values of the Museum of the Association, the Museum of Transylvanian Civilization ASTRA , an integral part of CNM ASTRA, brings before its visitors the traditional world of the charming multiethnic Transylvania.

A simple walk through the 96 hectares of the Museum of Traditional Popular Civilization ASTRA reveals to visitors an image of rural life throughout our country, materially manifested in over 400 houses, household annexes and technical installations.

The Museum of Saxon Ethnography Emil Sigerus , curator of Saxon culture and civilization in Transylvania, successor of the Carpathian Museum, has the most valuable ethnographic collections with a Saxon profile, bearing the name of the great personality, with significant merits in this field, Emil Sigerus.

The Franz Binder Museum of Universal Ethnography is the only museum in Romania profiled on the capitalization of extra-European heritage. Currently in conservation, the museum defines its vision as an anthropological museum of world cultures, meant to contribute to the understanding of the social phenomena of contemporary society.

Through the endowments of the ASTRA Center for Heritage , we address the issue of conservation and restoration on all types of support, based on solid theoretical and practical knowledge. Saving heritage requires dedication, understanding, knowledge and perseverance alike in the process of conservation-restoration of objects and monuments that time has left the mark of physical, chemical and biological degradation.

The Conservation and Restoration Training Center - CePCoR is a substructure within the ASTRA Museum which has two essential missions among the museum functions. The first, considers the preventive conservation of the collections, and the second, the professional improvement of those who contribute to the protection of the cultural heritage.
