At a stage when Transylvanian naturalism, like European one, was evolving rapidly in Sibiu, the Transylvanian Society of Natural Sciences ( Siebenbürghische Verein für Naturwissenschaften zu Hermannstadt ) was founded in 1849 on the initiative of Saxon, natural intellectuals. who wanted an organization in which to share their common passion for nature, to spread among the community and not only their discoveries, to educate the young generation in the spirit of knowledge and conservation of nature.

One of the problems of the Society, more and more imperative towards the end of the 19th century, was that of the storage of the constantly growing collections. In 1890, the idea of building a building specially designed for this purpose became more and more precise. The works started in the autumn of 1894, the festive inauguration taking place on May 12, 1895.
The building was built in the style of the late Italian Renaissance, with 3 levels (basement, ground floor and first floor), being completely renovated between 2006 and 2008.
