The Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre is a 65-acre ape and monkey sanctuary and rescue centre near Wool, Dorset, England.

The rescue centre has assisted governments around the world to stop the smuggling of primates from the wild since 1987.

At the Centre refugees of this illegal trade as well as those that have suffered abuse or neglect are rehabilitated into natural living groups.

Opening Times

Monkey World is open every day except Christmas Day, from 10am to 5pm.
During July and August, opening times extend from 10am to 6pm.
Last admission is 1 hour before closing.

All of Monkey World is accessible for our disabled visitors except for the Woodland Walk, due to the uneven ground. The only primate enclosure along the Woodland Walk is one marmoset house. In a few places around the park there are some uneven surfaces and short areas on steep cambers which may be difficult to negotiate for manual wheelchair users. We have a fleet of motorised scooters which are perfect for negotiating these areas, and can be booked in advance.

Car Parking

On arrival you will be able to park near to the entrance kiosks. We have several disabled bays which are are on a first come first serve basis.

Toilets

A separate disabled toilet with wheelchair access is situated near the main entrance and one near the gibbon enclosure.

The First Aid hut is equipped with a bench and toilet and can be used for adult changing, or any other privacy needs. Please ask a member of staff for access.

Monkey World has first aiders available for emergencies or assistance required.

Wheelchairs And Motorised Scooters

We have a number of motorised scooters that are available for reservation by calling in advance. The scooters are free of charge; however we do ask for a £10.00 refundable cash deposit and that you leave some form of identification (driving licence/passport) that will be returned to you at the end of your visit. If you choose the £10 deposit can be donated toward the maintenance and up-keep of the scooters. Also available are dual-controlled, or manual wheelchairs.

Hearing And Visually Impaired Visitors

If you require a written Keeper Talk please ask the Keeper at the beginning of the talk that you are interested in.

Guide dogs are permitted in the park. However they are not permitted to go into the Malagasy enclosure where the lemurs are free to roam around.

There are also 3 sensory statues at the park that are available for visually-impaired visitors to touch in order to guage the shape and size of some of our primates. There is a male orang-utan’s face (pictured), a male chimpanzee’s face and a common marmoset. Please ask for assistance if you would like access to the statues.

Children’s Play Area

We have wheelchair swings at our two main play areas; near the Watering Hole and the Great Ape Play Area at the far end of the park.

Please ask for assistance to secure your wheelchair safely. We also have 2 reclining chairs at the Great Ape Play Area.

The birds nest swings (pictured above) at both locations can also be used.
