The Tropenmuseum is an ethnographic museum located in Amsterdam, Netherlands, founded in 1864. One of the largest museums in Amsterdam, the museum accommodates eight permanent exhibitions and an ongoing series of temporary exhibitions, including modern and traditional visual arts and photographic works.

Located in a spectacular historic building, the Tropenmuseum has a variety of permanent and changing exhibitions dedicated to global cultures. The museum also has a special child-friendly section for families and younger visitors.

The Tropenmuseum is a museum about people, located in one of the most beautiful museum buildings in the Netherlands. The impressive national monument located at Oosterpark, in the heart of Amsterdam East, dates from 1926

The impressive central Lichthal offers a wide view of what the museum has to offer: an extensive permanent exhibition and regularly changing exhibitions in which the objects each tell a human story. Stories about universal human themes such as mourning, celebrating, decorating, praying or fighting. They are curious about the enormous cultural diversity that the world has to offer. In the Tropenmuseum you discover that we are all the same except for the differences: people.

The Tropenmuseum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm

The building

The museum has a lift and disabled toilet.

Parking

There are two parking spaces available for the disabled in the parking area of ​​the adjacent Amsterdam Tropen Hotel. You can use these parking spaces for free on presentation of an invalid card. No reservation is required.

Wheelchair & mobility scooter

The Tropenmuseum is easily accessible for wheelchair users. There are no thresholds and the elevator takes you to all floors. The museum also has a few push wheelchairs available. 

Unfortunately, it is not possible to visit the museum with a mobility scooter.

Admission for supervisors

The attendant of a visitor who cannot move independently through the museum has free museum entrance.  

Assistance dogs

Taking dogs and other (domestic) animals is not permitted in the museum, with the exception of an assistance dog (SOHO dog) or guide dog, if this is on a lead.
