Rijksmuseum Rijksmuseum, Museumstraat 1, 1071 XX Amsterdam, Netherlands

The Rijksmuseum is a Dutch national museum dedicated to arts and history in Amsterdam. The museum is located at the Museum Square in the borough Amsterdam South, close to the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and the Concertgebouw.

Located at the heart of Amsterdam's Museum Square, the Rijksmuseum is one of the world’s most renowned art museums and a true must-see. Even if you have only little time to spare, a walk through the Gallery of Honour will offer you a glimpse of Dutch’s finest art.

The Rijksmuseum’s collection illustrates the history of The Netherlands, from the Middle Ages to the present. Don’t miss out on the absolute highlights, like Vermeer’s Milkmaid, Van Gogh’s Self-portrait and Rembrandt’s most well-known painting: the Night Watch. Other must sees: the Gallery of Honour with paintings of Frans Hals, Jan Steen, Vermeer and Rembrandt; a gorgeous collection of Delft Blue pottery ranging from tea sets to vases, and the Cuypers Library, the biggest and oldest art history library in the Netherlands.

Open daily 9:00-17:00

Dropping off
The best place to drop off passengers is at the kiss & ride at the corner of the Jan Luijkenstraat and the Stadhouderskade. This is approximately 100 metres from the museum entrance.

Entrances

There are four entrances to the Rijksmuseum from the Passage (the arcade that runs under the building), two on either side. Two entrances have stairs and two have lifts. The Passage is a public thoroughfare for cyclists and pedestrians. If you have a wheelchair, rollator, walking stick or pram, security staff will direct you to the lifts.

Each staircase has twenty steps, with a landing after the thirteenth step. All stairs and lifts take you to the Atrium.

The Atrium is a public space that is open daily from 9 am until 6 pm. Here you will find the ticket offices, information desk, cloakroom, museum shop, public toilets and museum café.

Security staff may ask to inspect the contents of your bags at the entrance. Your cooperation is appreciated.

All museum exhibits can be enjoyed by wheelchair users and visitors with a rollator. All floors are served by lifts.

Companions

Visitors who are unable to move around the museum independently may bring a companion to assist them. The companion may enter the museum free of charge but must obtain a free ticket from the ticket office or information desk. To prevent misuse, the Rijksmuseum reserves the right to require companions to present a companion pass upon request at any time during your visit.

Mobility scooter

If you would like to visit the Rijksmuseum in a mobility scooter, we recommend visiting the museum between 9 am and 11 am or between 3 pm and 5 pm. The galleries are usually less busy at these times, making it easier for you to view the artworks and to manoeuvre around objects and other visitors.

The welfare of both our visitors and our art objects is the museum’s highest priority. We therefore kindly request that you limit your speed inside the museum to match that of walking visitors.

Upon entering the museum, you may be asked to demonstrate your agility in operating your mobility scooter. When the museum is very busy or under other exceptional circumstances, security staff may decide not to permit mobility scooters inside the museum. In that case, we will make every effort to seek alternative options or times for you to visit the museum.
