The National Botanic Gardens are located in Glasnevin, 5 km north-west of Dublin city centre, Ireland. The 19.5 hectares are situated between Prospect Cemetery and the River Tolka where it forms part of that river's floodplain.
Located just 3 km from Dublin city centre, the National Botanic Gardens are an oasis of calm and beauty, and entry is free. A premier scientific institution, the gardens also contain the National Herbarium and several historic wrought iron glasshouses.
One of many magnificent Dublin gardens, The National Botanic Gardens was established in 1705 by the Royal Dublin Society. These colourful gardens stretching over an area of 19.5 hectares, the garden area contains a large collection of plants including approximately 20,000 species.
Gardens are accessible for visitors with disabilities, but there are some steep gradients. Wheelchairs are available on request at the Visitor Centre Desk.

Accessibility
Do you have wheelchairs? The National Botanic Gardens has wheelchairs at the Visitor centre near the main entrance. They are available on a 'first come first served' basis, and cannot be booked.
Can all parts of the Gardens be accessed by wheelchair users? Please ask at the visitor centre or the security lodge on arrival, where maps are available. Generally paths throughout the gardens are broad and have an all-weather surface, however there are flights of steps in 2 places. The glasshouses are all accessible: Entrance to the Alpine yard is through the double doors facing the Visitor Centre, entrance to the house is through the back doors.
The west wing (right hand side) of the curvilinear house is only accessible from the Central house.
The Library has a lift, as does the Visitor centre, allowing wheelchair users to access the upper floors.
Are dogs allowed? Dogs are prohibited in the Gardens, with the exception of guide dogs. At our gardens in Kilmacurragh dogs are allowed, so long as they are kept on a lead at all times.
Where can I park? There is a car park at the Gardens for which a variable fee applies. For Hours 1 and 2 it is €1 per hour; Hours 3 onwards: €2 per hour. There is also space for up to 3 coaches.
