Originally built in the 1920s with an historic background and prime location 43 Below was originally known as The Alhambra, a buzzing hive of activity filled with World War II servicemen swapping battle tales over a cold beer and a hearty meal. 43 Below is a popular destination for city workers and tourists, particularly for their great cocktails from around the globe and Friday night after work drinks.
Take the Plunge. On Barrack Street, in the middle of the city, just opposite the Town Hall, you will find a staircase going down below street level. It´s always an exciting moment, if you haven´t been down a staircase like this before, to discover what´s at the bottom. It could turn out to be a very dodgy establishment - but instead it´s a bright, beautifully designed, all-purpose bar and restaurant. You can´t help wishing there were more places like this in Perth. If you want to come in for a quiet drink after work, the wine list is exemplary and the cocktails on offer are highly tempting. The service is friendly and easy-going, and you may well decide to stay for dinner after all. If so, you´ll find a great range of contemporary Australian cuisine such as sweet potato gnocchi, leek and bacon pot pie, or tender ridge scotch fillet cooked to perfection. Best dish: Mixed Calamari in Fennel Seed
