Breathtaking harbor views, vast perennial gardens, bike paths, grand lawns, an urban farm, and the fintastic SeaGlass carousel.

The Battery Conservancy designs, builds, maintains, and enlivens the historic Battery, the 25-acre public park at the southern tip of Manhattan, in partnership with the City of New York’s Department of Parks and Recreation. The Conservancy was founded to bring a new vision and focused resources to the park and has raised over $150M from private and public sources.

A group of civic-minded New Yorkers driven by a passion for the city’s history and future came together in the mid-1990’s to reclaim this storied landscape from neglect and dilapidation. They continue to spearhead the revitalization of the city’s birthplace inspired by an ethos of environmental responsibility, historical authenticity, design excellence, innovative education, and openness to all.

Today, The Battery, the thriving green heart of Downtown New York, is a model of conservation and biodiversity with vast public gardens, organic urban farms, toxin-free lawns and SeaGlass, the innovative aquarium carousel.

The Battery Conservancy was established in 1994 to revitalize and rebuild The Battery. The park entered a period of decline in the late 20th century and lost its place as a popular destination for New Yorkers and tourists. The Conservancy, a not-for-profit corporation, brought a renewed vision to the public space.

Over the last 23 years, the Conservancy has pumped new life into The Battery and raised capital to transform the once dilapidated and rundown dustbowl into a tranquil public garden and outdoor oasis. Through the successful initiatives listed below, The Battery has become a model of conservation and biodiversity efforts.

On the south side of Manhatten Island, Battery is the gateway to Liberty Island. It is a small park with beautiful views out to sea. There are lots of vendors here to enjoy refreshments and the park also has public toilets that are large and clean and also have power assisted doors. We were able to feed the squirrels here too!
