The Scottish Seabird Centre is an conservation and education charity, as well as a five star visitor attraction. Environmental hub with close-ups of sea birds and mammals, a discovery area and seasonal seafaris.

Arriving at the Scottish Seabird Centre

  • On arrival, the front entrance to the Centre is facing you as you come up the pathway. This is a tarmac covering and there is a railing on one side
  •  There is a push button access for the front door 
  • This front access door is 880mm wide 
  • The front entrance is carpeted then there is a flat, vinyl surface throughout the ground level of the Centre 
  • You can access the Seabird Café via the decking, which is to the right of the main entrance
  •  This is a wooden surface but the decking area is closed in wet weather 
  • You can access the Boat Trip Booking Office by heading down the stairs, through The Gannet Gateway. At the bottom of the stairs turn right 
  • There is a ramp to access the Boat Trip Booking Office 
  • Staff will be on hand to assist with the opening of doors 
  • For those with mobility issues, you can access the Boat Trip Booking Office from the harbour area via the side road to the harbour

Wheelchair users 

  • The Centre can be accessed by wheelchair or scooter
  • The maximum width for wheelchairs or scooters is 880mm
  • We have one wheelchair available to borrow – subject to availability. 

Buggies 

  • Buggies are welcome in the Seabird Centre and decking area 
  • The maximum width for buggies is 880mm 
  • We have baby changing facilities 
  • Baby bottle and food warming is available on request 
  • Buggies cannot be taken on any of the boat trips 

Lift access

  • There is lift access to the Discovery Centre
  • The maximum weight for the lift is 630kg or approximately eight people
  • The maximum width for the lift is 880mm
  • There can be one wheelchair and one carer in the lift at any one time
  • There is an emergency phone

Induction Loop

  • There are induction loops in the Gift Shop, Seabird Café and Discovery Centre

Discovery Centre

  • Access to the Discovery Centre is to the right of the Admissions Desk. This can be accessed by lift or by stairs. There are 25 stairs and there are hand rails on each side
  • The maximum weight for the lift is 630kg or approximately eight people
  • The maximum width for the lift is 880mm
  • There can be one wheelchair and one carer in the lift at any one time
  • There is an emergency phone
  • There are large print versions of the Discovery Centre leaflets available
  • Braille version of the leaflet will soon be available – please contact us in advance to confirm availability
  • We have guides available in Spanish, French, Italian, Polish, German, Dutch, Norwegian, Danish and Gaelic
  • There are staff and volunteers located throughout the Discovery Centre who will be able to assist with any visitor queries. Visitors may also ask to speak to the Duty Manager if required
  • Throughout the Discovery Centre there are TVs, projectors and screens
  • There is a variety of low level lighting
  • There is natural light in the Kids’ Corner
  • The floor in the Discovery Centre is vinyl: there is carpet in the Wildlife Theatre
  • The flooring is predominantly flat, except for the Flyway Tunnel which has a slope
  • The chairs in the Wildlife Theatre must be pushed down and will flip up without weight on them
  • There are additional chairs throughout the Discovery Centre – additional seating can be requested if required
  • You can exit the Discovery Centre via the lift or by stair. There are 24 stairs to the Scope Deck and there are handrails on each side
  • At the top of the stairs you enter the final part of the Discovery Centre – the Scope Deck. The door to this area must be pulled open
  • There are two doors to access the external balcony area – staff can assist with opening these doors on request
  • There is a door to gain access to the Gift Shop/ Seabird Café area from the Discovery Centre. This door must be pulled open

Toilets

  • There are toilets located at the Picture Gallery
  • There is one disabled toilet
  • There is an option to use a hand-dryer or paper towels  
  • The width of this door is 890mm
  • The distance from toilet door to toilet seat is 1.5m
  • The height of this toilet seat is 440mm
  • The light is on an auto sensor/ wall switch
  • There is an alarm pull cord located next to the toilet
  • In the gents’ toilets there is one cubicle and two urinals
  • In the ladies’ toilets there are four cubicles
  • In both, there are hot air hand-dryers only
  • The lights in the ladies’ and gents’ toilets are automatically activated by movement in these areas
