One of Brisbane's oldest licensed venues, The Char Grill and Terrace Bar has consistently served hassle-free, restaurant-quality meals in this historic hotel since 1884. Nesled amongst the busy Caxton Street strip, this modern pub features five bars, indoor and alresco dining areas, as well as a street cafe. Specialising in steaks, ribs and seafood, The Char Grill is perfect for a casual meal with friends before a night out.
The Char Grill and Terrace Bar spills out the back of one of Queensland's oldest licensed premises, the Caxton Hotel. The hotel itself dates back to 1884. Its interiors vary from old classic pub to a more sophisticated, informal space thanks to a recent, rather lavish, transformation. The restaurant offers a good selection of fresh local seafood, export-quality beef from Central and Northern Queensland and great lighter picks such as salads. Perfect for groups, this is one of those rare places where there's no hassle because you know everyone will get a grand-old feed and professional service to match. If you've got an urge to indulge, the "jumbo point of rump" (a gutsy 450g steak) will stop you in your tracks. It's served, as all cuts on the menu are, with a flavourful Idaho potato, a light side of salad and a selection of sauces. For something a little more manageable, try the one-inch thick New York cut sirloin.
The outdoor area provides a peek of Suncorp Stadium. If you don't want to hear the score, take up dining a little further inside. For an ideal kick-off to your meal, try daily-shucked oysters or the famous prime beef sausage platter – char-grilled premium sausage served with a house special tangy dipping sauce. A superb snapper and mango curry is a delectable step away from the norm. In this dish the fish and mango are bathed in a creamy coconut-based yellow curry and served with steamed Jasmine rice and a fresh mango and green papaya salsa.
