If you haven’t visited a Science Centre before, you might wonder what to expect. If science wasn’t (or isn't!) your thing at school, you might even be a bit scared at the prospect? Trust us, you’ll like it! We’re not like a museum where you’ll just find stuff in cases and be expected to look and not touch. At Life, you’re encouraged to get stuck in: explore, create, have fun – whatever your age. Our friendly Science Explainers are always around to answer questions, explain or just have a chat.
We have a changing programme of exhibitions, events and activities but we also have some regular ‘stars’ that we think you’ll love.
Life Science Centre is a fully accessible venue providing access friendly facilities for all visitors. We are proud to hold the Equality Standard Gold Award along with our friends in the Newcastle Gateshead Cultural Venues consortium.
If you have any special access requirements please get in touch before you visit by calling (0191) 243 8210 (Monday to Friday), so that we can meet your needs. Carers of disabled visitors are admitted free of charge (one carer per disabled visitor, including when the disabled visitor is aged 4 or under); the normal admission fee applies to the disabled visitor. Please bring some proof of entitlement such as a letter showing that you receive support, or a Companion card, a Children and Young People's Network Card, or similar.
For families with young children
*The baby changing facilities located by the Life Cafe on the ground floor are designed for baby changing and to provide privacy for nursing mothers should they require it (there is no toilet). The baby changing facilities located near the entrance and on the upper floor combine a disabled toilet and baby change facilities.
**A £5 deposit is required, £4 of which is returnable in exchange for the key.
For visitors with limited mobility and wheelchair users
Free admission for carer (one carer per disabled visitor). Please add a note in 'additional comments' when booking tickets online if a free carer ticket is required. Please bring some proof of entitlement such as a letter showing that you receive support, or a Companion card, a Children and Young People's Network Card, or similar.
*£10 deposit required which will be refunded once the wheelchair has been returned.
Wheelchair users and Skating at Life
Skating at Life is open annually from November - February.
Wheelchair users and their carers can usually use the ice rink, however during very busy times we may have to delay or refuse entry for safety reasons. We can recommend quiet times to visit - get in touch for details. Wheelchair users pay the normal ticket price and their carer (one per wheelchair user) goes free. Carers must wear shoe grips (provided by Life) so they can control the wheelchair on the ice. Motorised wheelchairs must be set to manual.
