Here in this warm and luxuriant garden, you can follow in the footsteps of the 1920s plant hunters to see plants that flowered in Britain for the first time.
Award-winning magnolias and rhododendrons are still nurtured by those with a passion for their beauty and extraordinary story and five sections of walled gardens are crammed with tender exotic species from around the world.
Winding wooded paths follow a half-mile incline to sea views across Mount's Bay, and the descent via the drive is bordered by a stream garden and open meadows.
There’s also a kitchen garden built to the dimensions of Noah’s Ark and a visit to the tea-room means you’ll most likely eat some of its produce.
Dogs on leads are welcome throughout the garden, including the tea-room garden.
Now everybody can enjoy the sea views from the top of the garden thanks to the all-terrain Tramper which is available to hire. It’s been supplied by our friends at the not for profit organisation Countryside Mobility.
The Tramper is an electric all-terrain mobility scooter designed specifically to cover rough ground and grass safely. It can go up and down slopes, over bumps and tree roots, through shallow puddles, mud and soft ground.
The Tramper is for use by anyone who struggles with walking. You don’t have to be registered disabled or have a Blue Badge to use it; it can simply be that your difficulties are caused by age or a permanent or temporary condition.
With a top speed of four miles an hour it can keep pace with the briskest walking companion.
To use the Tramper you’ll need to become a member of Countryside Mobility. This costs £10.00 per year or £2.50 for a two week ‘taster membership’. We can sign you up for membership at the reception and give you training on how to use the Tramper, which takes around 10-15 minutes.
We recommend that you read the medical and health information and terms and conditions of use before getting here as this will help you to assess whether you’ll be able to use the Tramper and will save you time when registering for membership.
Once you’ve signed up for Countryside Mobility membership this then allows you access to nearly 40 Countryside Mobility sites around South West England – and they’re hoping to add even more.
We strongly recommend that you telephone us in advance to make a booking by calling 01736 363148(option 2) during normal opening hours (10.30-5 Sunday to Thursday). There’s no charge for hiring the Tramper.
Please be aware that all Tramper users must be accompanied by one other person and one of you must be in possession of a working mobile phone in case of difficulties.
