Napier Hotel Napier Hotel, 210 Napier St, Fitzroy VIC 3065, Australia

Across from Fitzroy Town Hall lies The Napier, a venerable old pub founded in 1866 that's maintained its original decorative plasterwork and stained glass windows. The main bar is decked out with Fitzroy Lions memorabilia and upstairs is an artist-run exhibition space. The menu here is very much geared towards old school pub favourites, plus, there are 11 varieties of beer on tap and plenty more by the bottle.

The Napier Hotel is one of Fitzroy's many little old pubs, and has been keeping people happy for well over a century. It's a cosy place, with the smallish rooms and high ceilings that go with the age of the building. It's got a bar area with stools and high tables, usually crowded with regulars, as well as a separate dining area which was once the lounge. There's also a small, attractive beer garden. The pub is full of posters, mementoes and photographs and lots of Fitzroy Football Club material in the bar which dates back to a time when the Lions were a local team.

The food is divided between a printed menu and a blackboard list of specials. The cooking style is eclectic and the servings are generous. Huge, in fact. Choose from steak sandwiches, kangaroo fillets, fish and chips, or perhaps a vegetarian dish that features dhal, rice, and a range of vegetables finished with a pappadam like a jaunty cap. In addition to the beer, there's a range of wines at friendly prices that would suit any fine restaurant.
