The Firehouse of Ringwood is a versatile and friendly mix of cafe, bar, lounge and restaurant. Keeping elements of its original 1929 fire house location, the rooms are simply furnished, with dark timber tables and bentwood chairs. The Firehouse serves a cafe-style breakfast menu and a Modern Australian lunch and dinner menu that takes you from tapas to freshly shucked oysters to quality meats from the grill.
Having been a firehouse in its past, this building is a versatile mix of spaces. The main dining area is where the fire trucks were parked, the private rooms were originally part of the firemen's residences, and the upstairs lounge was once recreational area. Yet the charm of The Firehouse extends beyond its history. What makes it so attractive is the warm hospitality and sense of community that the Dungan brothers have created. Keeping elements of the original 1929 building, the rooms are simply furnished, but the walls are adorned with the more modern work of local artists.
Breakfast runs until 3pm and includes muesli, house-baked muffins and kippers or eggs with any number of options. From afternoon, the menu largely takes its inspiration from the Mediterranean. Lunch might be a simple dish of toasted flatbread with a range of toppings, or a salad such as the lamb kofta served with Turkish bread, tzatziki and a fresh salad of frisee, roasted tomatoes and braised shallots. Come dinner-time, there are lots of small dishes to share, and some very smart formal main courses, such as the Gippsland lamb pie with Moroccan flavours, or the beautiful rib eye with gnocchi. The dessert menu includes small, sweet mouthfuls such as Turkish delights, as well as decadent treats like the steamed banana and toffee pudding. The wine list is very reasonably priced and full of good things to try too.
