Popup island bar on the Yarra, Ponyfish Island, is located under the Elizabeth Street footbridge. It's a cool place to chill out - funky tunes call attention to its hidden location while patrons sit on stools fashioned out of pallets beneath hanging baskets swinging from the rafters. The menu keeps things simple with toasties, salads and waffles, plus a few more substantial meals like casseroles and burgers. The serendipitous discovery of this unique atoll created the perfect opportunity for three intrepid explorers to form a rag-tag crew. Colonised by Grant Smillie, Jerome Borazio and Andrew Mackinnon, they knew they had finally found the project that they had been searching for.
The island takes its name from the elusive Ponyfish, a mysterious creature apparently seen swimming in the Yarra River. Much debate has been roused as to whether the Ponyfish actually exists or if the creature is simply a fabrication created by those who wish to believe.
