La Sangria Bar La Sangria Bar, 46 Johnston St, Fitzroy VIC 3065, Australia

This Fitzroy restaurant has them dancing in the aisles - and on the bar - but La Sangria Bar also does a great line in old-school tapas dishes. This laid back wine bar is perfect for groups, with large pitchers of sangria on offer and a number of tasty bites to share - just be sure to book ahead.

La Sangria Bar was established in 1992, out of a need for a great Spanish bar in a Spanish area. Johnston Street developed a reputation as a Spanish Street. With the fiesta taking place in November each year, the Hogar Espagñol club just over the road, and a number of restaurants lining the street, it is the perfect location for a Spanish bar.

In the early days, liquor licensing required food to be served. Over time the rules changed, and today La Sangria Bar is strictly a bar.

The venue was established by Lenny Donateo, who continues to run the place. He loves it, and continues to improve the venue so he and the patrons can have an even better time.

The name came about because the venue needed a Spanish name. Many Spanish people suggested the name, as the drink title reminded them of home. It seemed ideal for a venue that wanted to provide a taste of Spain

With the fluorescent signage beckoning you inside, the La Sangria Bar in Fitzroy seeks to recreate for revellers an authentic Spanish experience, with all the accompanying sounds and tastes. Along with serving sangria, tapas food is also available including grilled quail and tortillas. Friday and Saturday nights are popular for the live Spanish music and DJs entertaining revellers.
