A Hereford Beefstouw had its beginnings in a small rural town in the cold climes of central Denmark. In 1971, a small historic building came up for sale in the hamlet of Lund, close to where the Damgaard family owned a clothing factory. With a desire to utilise the beautiful building, and a lack of dining options in the region for the visiting customers of their factory, the Damgaard family opened their first A Hereford Beefstouw steakhouse - named after the Hereford cattle that grazed on the family’s land.
In 2007, Lars Damgaard on a visit to his beef suppliers in Australia, met Australian farmers/winemakers Tim and Sarah Burvill. A love of beef and wine between the three eventually lead to a farm being purchased near Coonawarra in South Australia - its purpose to supply the A Hereford Beefstouw restaurants in Scandinavia with Hereford beef. The first Australian A Hereford Beefstouw soon followed, opening in 2011 in Adelaide, and now, the second in Melbourne.
Our focus at A Hereford Beefstouw has always been on the beef. Everything we do starts with steak and with our Danish roots in mind. We focus on Nordic foodways of fresh, seasonal and cool climate produce, offered in a relaxed Danish designed setting. From owning our own beef herd and dry ageing facility, to designing and manufacturing the lights, tables, chairs and knives, our approach is relaxed Nordic in simplicity with a focus on the details.
